DeckSight Installation

Remove the stock LCD and replace with DeckSight

The most difficult part is removing the Stock LCD. An excellent guide for doing so can be found on the iFixit website. Below is some text instructions but the iFixit guide is a bit more in-depth.

IFixit LCD replacement Guide

  1. ) Remove the back cover.

    1. Power down the Steam Deck. You may want to set it into “battery storage mode” to be safe.

    2. Remove the 8 screws on the back of the Steam Deck

    3. Use the wedge tool to pry the back case off. It may be easiest to start near the triggers.

  2. ) Remove the motherboard

    1. First, disconnect the battery connector from the motherboard by pulling on the cloth strap. You may need to remove the motherboard shield first to get access to the connector

    2. Remove the metal motherboard shield by removing the screws around the perimeter. There is also 1 screw under the metallic tape in the center, this screw also is one of three that hold down the CPU heatsink.

    3. Remove the SSD by removing the screw then pulling it out. Under the SSD is a shielding sticker, remove this sticker and keep it to reuse.

    4. Carefully lift the antenna connectors out of the WIFI module.

    5. Disconnect the fan connector from the motherboard, remove the 2 remaining fan screws. There are 2 remaining screws on the CPU heatsink remove these as well. The fan and heatsink will lift out together.

    6. Remove the speaker connector from the motherboard.

    7. Disconnect the Display FPC cable from the motherboard connector (lower left) by lifting the connector latch and pulling the cable out. Be careful not to break the latch on the FPC Connectors, If that happens it is likely you will need to have the connector replaced professionally

    8. To the left of the motherboard, is the right button board. The left most FPC cable is connected to the bottom of the motherboard. Disconnect this FPC cable from the right button board.

    9. You may optionally disconnect the audio FPC cable from the Audio board towards the top of the Steam Deck but this is generally not necessary. Once the motherboard is free you can turn it over and just disconnect the audio cable from the backside of the motherboard.

    10. Remove the 3 remaining screws from the Motherboard along it’s outer perimeter.

    11. Lift out the motherboard. If you did not previously disconnect the audio cable from the audio board, tip the motherboad over to the right as you remove it and do not lift it up to far. You can access the audio connector on the backside of the motherboard to remove it now. Set the motherboard aside

  3. ) Remove the LCD

    1. Warm the edges around the LCD with a hairdryer or heat gun set to low. Be careful not to overheat the Steam Deck, the only purpose is to soften the adhesive holding the display in.

    2. Start near a corner and slowly lift the LCD with the suction cup. Once the corner has raised enough to insert the plastic wedge, start using it in conjunction with the suction cup working your way down the edge to separate the adhesive. Do NOT use a metal tool, the likely hood of cracking the LCD increases substantially

    3. Use some alcohol and the plastic pry tool to clean up the adhesive under where the display was adhered on the Steam Deck.

  4. ) Install new adhesive strips

    1. Included is a set of adhesive strips in several sizes. These are installed as shown here

  5. ) Place The DeckSight OLED into display area

    1. Remove the adhesive backing and place DeckSight in the cavity, on top of the adhesive. Make sure the window for the ambient light sensor is at the top and aligns with the light sensor in the Steam Deck.

  6. ) Attach the Decksight FPC cable.

    1. Turn the console back over and open the FPC connector latch on the back of the OLED through the square hole in the midframe. Insert the FPC cable into the connector. This cable is similar in shape to the original display FPC cable but it is not the same, do not use the stock FPC cable.

  7. ) Reverse the process to reassebmble,

    1. Before installing the motherboard, make sure the DeckSight FPC cable is tucked under it and will not be pinched by the motherboard.

  8. ) When re-assembly is complete you may now turn the Steam Deck back on

    1. You may have to plug the charger in to wake the Steam Deck Back up from Battery Storage mode

    2. It may also be necessary to hold the power button for a few seconds

    3. First boot after battery removal can take a while. If unsure if it is “on” touch the trackpads as haptics generally work even when not fully booted. Attaching an external monitor via the USB-C port will work even if the built-in screen doesn’t
